Generating minimum hourly rates of £20+ per hour, experienced tutors can expect a job in the industry to be financially uplifting. Based on the particular subjects they specialise in and offer, research has found that the rewards are vast.
Online tutoring experts Improve Tuition, a service providing tuition in centres and online tuition, have recently studied the counties of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to gain the profitable details concerning remunerative areas for tutors.
They discovered that remarkable subjects such as Mandarin rewarded considerable financial gains of £53 as an average hourly cost. This was closely tailed with the likes of scientific subjects such as Physics and Chemistry, generating hourly rates ranging from £45-£48.
Findings concerning the most economically flourishing areas in regards to private tutoring showed a divide between Southern and Western areas. It was revealed that teachers in Hampshire could expect to earn an astounding £39.96 compared to Gloucester, where earnings per hour were £10 less.
The Best Places To Be A Private Tutor
With Southern locations allowing the most economic success in the private tutoring industry, table rankings disclosed that our very own Yorkshire had average hourly costs of £29.60 per hour. Much of this depended on the income of families and how affluent they were in different areas nationwide. Additionally, there were also variations depending on whether tutoring was done 1-1 or as a group session. Kirklees tutoring service ‘Improve Tuition’ was one of the businesses demonstrating the contrasting rates.
More extensive research showed that areas with a greater number of grammar schools and private schools earned higher average hourly rates. Unquestionably this was due to the prestigious nature and higher expectations of these schools.
The Sutton Trust, a charity exploring the impacts of social mobility, conducted a poll of almost 3000 pupils to investigate true percentages concerning the demand of private tuition. They found an increasing figure of 27% of -16 year olds receiving private tuition in the past two years. Although primary school figures had not been investigated, it is likely the figure is even higher.
Within these two years, almost a quarter of current secondary school teachers had transferred from the public to the private sphere, offering tutoring services after direct communications with parents. Subject specialism ranged with the sciences and maths costing average hourly rates of £40-£50, as well as the modern foreign languages such as French and German.
“Private tuition is the difference between obtaining the results they want and being disappointed” R Alex Dyer, founder of Tutor House.
As social mobility remains on the rise, future tutors can expect to take on board an increasing number of pupils. New opportunities may also emerge for existing teachers, allowing them to transfer their work to the private sector. However, as our findings reveal, location is an important consideration for all businesses wanting to gain successful revenue.
