Applications Of Trigonometry In Real Life

Trigonometry was basically developed to solve geometric problems that involve triangles. In the initial days, it was studied and examined by sea captains for the purpose of navigation, surveyors to map out new lands, by engineers and some other professionals. In recent days, trigonometry is used in various areas such as the designing of electrical circuits, the science of seismology, measuring the heights of tides in the ocean, describing the state of an atom, interpreting a musical tone and in many other fields.

In simple terms, Trigonometry means calculations with triangles. Using trigonometry, we can build relationships in mathematics that contain lengths, heights and angles of different triangles. Trigonometry spreads its applications into real-life situations also. There is an extension for trigonometric ratios called trigonometric functions to deal with coordinate geometry too. In addition to that, trigonometric equations have more advanced applications in many fields.

For example, if you know the distance from where you observe the tower and the angle of elevation, you can quickly determine the height of the tower. In case, if you have the measure of one side and the measure for the angle of depression from the top of the tower, then you can easily determine another side in the triangle. Here, all you need to know is one side and angle of the triangle. Similarly, when you know the height of the tree and length of its shadow, then you can find the angle of elevation from the endpoint of a shadow with respect to the top of the tree using trigonometric ratios.

In the field of construction, we use trigonometry to estimate the measures of fields and areas. It is also used in the construction of residential/commercial wall, that is parallel and perpendicular to each other and also used to estimate the height, length and width, etc. Architects use trigonometric identities while developing an extensive infrastructure since they play an essential role in determining the accurate values for sizes and proportions, as much as possible.

Considering the importance and applications of trigonometry, it has become necessary for the students to learn this concept as a part of their education. There are a lot of applications in our daily life where we are using this concept knowingly or unknowingly.
