There are 54 independent nations in Africa. Six of them are island nations while 48 nations are located on the African mainland. The country of Algeria in Northern Africa is the largest country on the continent with a size of nearly one million square miles. The Gambia in West Africa, on the other hand, is Africa’s smallest nation.
Overall, the safety situation in Africa has increased a lot over the last years. The island nations are still the safest countries in Africa, but popular tourist countries like Namibia, Tanzania and Rwanda are also safe to visit.
Apart from international monarchs, some African presidents, are also the longest serving presidents in the world. The president of Cameroon, for example, has served for the last 44 years. Also the president of Equatorial Guinea has been in service for over 40 years.
